Money and Second Life

Today, I visited quite an obvious scam location within Second Life, some kind of having to go to a website to fill out surveys in order to reap masses of $$$. Well, I just fire up my unpatched Internet Explorer and then I'm all along...

Unintenionally I had given myself an outfit that looked official, so I was soon addressed by a multitude of newcomers asking me the same questions - where to make money fast. Well, I told them that the fastest way to make money would be to sign up for a Premium Account or at least trade some real dollars for Linden dollars. It surely is the fastest, and even the cheapest way.

Lets look at the facts. I tried to buy 1000 L$, which would have cost me 4.04 U$. That is about the value of going downtown and have two soft drinks. Opposed to that, I can spend 15 Minutes on a dancing platform to "earn" 3 L$. Do the math: to gain L$ 999 dancing, I would need to spend 83:15 hours, given the possibility to dance continuously without any network glitches, limitations and client disconnects due to inactivity. Even the power my computer consumes in that time will possibly outweigh the fortune I've earned!

It's not even a "ripoff" to pay for Second Life using a Premium account by any measure, considering that I have to pay as well in order to play a MMORPG like World of Warcraft. The true ripoffs, in the end, wait for the users who think they can truly make money "fast". It doesn't work in First Life, and it won't work in Second Life either.
